What to Do After a Car Accident (Step-by-Step)

  1. Make sure everyone is safe
Move to a safe area if possible and turn on hazard lights. Call 911 if anyone is injured.

  2. Call the police (when needed)
If there are injuries, a hit-and-run, or major damage, request a police report.

  3. Document everything

  • Take photos/video of all vehicles, license plates, damage, at the scene

  • Photograph driver’s licenses and insurance cards

  • Get names, phone numbers, and witness info

  1. Exchange information

  • Driver name + phone number

  • Insurance company + policy number

  • Vehicle make/model + plate number

  1. Do not admit fault
Just share facts. Let insurance determine liability.

  2. Notify your insurance company ASAP
File the claim and ask for the claim number and adjuster contact info.

  3. Choose your repair shop (it’s your right)
You can pick any shop you want—don’t feel pressured to use an insurer’s “preferred” shop.

  4. Get a professional estimate & schedule repairs
Bring your vehicle in for a free inspection. Hidden damage is common after disassembly.

  5. Ask about a rental car (if needed)
Confirm rental coverage with your insurance and get the reservation set up early.

  6. Keep all records
Save receipts, tow invoices, rental paperwork, and claim notes.
